Promoting Theater By Marginalized Communities
From the beginning of my theater education, I noticed something that bothered me deeply: the plays touted as "genius" and "must-reads" for drama students were written by almost solely older cisgender white men. By the time I had read Waiting for Godot for the millionth time for a drama course, I had had it. Yes, these plays were important to study, but what about plays by women? By BIPOC? By queer people, disabled people, and/or gender non-conforming people? As a disabled queer woman, I wanted to see more plays by playwrights that I knew were the silent majority: people who weren't cisgender white men! Theater is supposedly this welcoming and open community, so why doesn't our theatrical cannon reflect that?
And so, after a few months of enduring the COVID-19 pandemic and being unable to teach theater, I decided to create the Play-Mates podcast. I missed theater, talking about it, and interacting with other theater lovers, and I knew others did too. So I combined my life-long dream of teaching people about a theater cannon that centered people who weren't cis white men with my longing to connect with my theatrical community.
Now, after one (attempted) rebrand, we're back for good as an audio theatre platform under First Kiss Theatre! Myself, Lee Harrison Daniel, and Eliza Kuperschmid are the main producers and directors in this space, helping to create new and exciting audio theatre pieces each month by an emerging artist. Check out Artist Crush Discush on FKT's Instagram for the usual interview portion!
Thank you for listening, and joining our community of theatre lovers!
